Attracted
to Light CRT Sphere
Commissioned by the Bohen Foundation, with additional support from
the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, this piece will be created as the
culmination of Doug and Mike Starn’s past five years of work
exploring civilization’s scientific and spiritual attraction
to light. CRT Sphere consists of 24-36 monitors (7” to
21”) removed from their cabinets and contained in a Plexiglass
sphere. On the monitors a film (in progress in the studio) traces
the silent, shadow-filled world of moths as a metaphor for the human
condition. The loose narrative, based on George Pabst's 1928 film
Pandora’s Box, represents the climax of Mike and Doug’s
photographic series Attracted to Light.
This video sculpture will travel as the featured work in international
museums (shows are in the early stages of planning) and be accompanied
by a self-designed DVD publication serving as a diary to the Starns’
explorations with abundant images, writings, video excerpts, and source
material.
